Three Ideas for Packaging That Stands Out!
With so much competition amongst online retailers, one way to really communicate your branding and make your product stand out from the rest is with your packaging.
Strong branding is a powerful customer retention tool, often considered more important than price factors alone, and putting some time and thought into the experience your customer has when they receive their order is time well spent.
As an e-commerce fulfilment company, we partner with a wide variety of businesses, selling online through lots of different markets.
We thought it would be interesting to share our experiences as an e-commerce delivery expert in some ideas to make your packaging stand out from the crowd! 1. Sustainable / Recyclable packaging More and more, our clients are looking for ways to reduce plastic and demonstrate the environmentally friendly qualities of their products.
There are lots of ways you can consider to do this: – Remove plastic labels / tags – use printed care labels in clothing, use paper or card swing tags – Replace plastic sticky tape with paper sticky tape – Use biodegradable PP bags which have less longer term impact on the environment – Switch from plastic packaging to carboard sleeves or boxes – Send delivery notes via email rather than printing them out for every parcel you send – Have your packaging custom printed for you, rather than buying plastic stickers to add your branding to bags and boxes – buying in bulk can make this a cheaper option than buying small quantities of standard packing & buying branded stickers or labels – Minimalise the size of your packaging (we have ALL had those deliveries with one tiny item in a huge box) – it will save you on the cost of your postage too!
If you use a fulfilment company to dispatch your online orders for you, talk to them about what packaging options they can recommend.
Your e-commerce fulfilment partner may be able to purchase recyclable packaging for you at a great bulk price, so it is well worth a conversation!
2. Everybody loves a freebie! Include small incentives or gifts in your package. The customer experience is a multi-sensory one; if your product is a beauty product, does your customer experience a beautiful scent when they open their package?
If your market is in sportswear or sports products, could you add something small – like an isotonic drinks dissolvable tab for example – which won’t make the parcel bigger or heavier, or cost a great deal, but be an added bonus?
Some well-known online retailers include small product samples, usually something simple like a small bag of sweets, in their parcels. You could even try contacting brands who have a similar customer demographic to yours and see if there are opportunities to collaborate and have free samples to give away to your customers!
Your fulfilment agent will usually be able to add a product or item to every package at no additional cost.
3. Think about your customer Who is your biggest customer market? What sort of product do you sell? How would you like to receive your product in the post, and what would make your experience of opening your purchase really special?
Luxury products tend to have a larger margin and necessitate the need to put a little more effort into the packaging.
Using simple and cost effective methods such as colour coordinated tissue paper, branded stickers or cards, tying your product with a ribbon, are all easy ways to make the delivery experience that little bit more special.
If you sell handmade or handcrafted products, a great way to add a personal touch is to include a handwritten thank you card with your order – customers will feel that their custom is appreciated, and it makes buying from a craftsperson or a small business that bit more unique when you feel your purchase is appreciated.
